In Berlin of the 90ties the main spots if not the best one for sub- and  underground-culture in the world is the starting point to be able to understand what it means to walk for the first time in the Danny´s Tavern in Chicago. This is like time travel!

Back at Danny’s next Sunday with Scottie McNiece for another edition of Uncanned Music! Please help us give our special guest a warm Chicago welcome, he lugged a big ole’ bag of Brazilian vinyl in from Berlin; excited to have founder of Tropical Diaspora Records, DJ Garrincha, spinning records with us.

Tropical Diaspora Records® is committed to create and relect a musical narrativ originated by forced African migration, its collective memory and their powerful musical herstories. We are popular based, politically conscious and anti-colonial. As we carry out our musical research, we come face to face with the question of how to address the cultural life of communities that have been dispossessed and opressed for many centuries. Ways of looking and narratives need to be handed back, as we observe with sadness how mainstream recording companies are still in the business of taking advantage of, expropriating the cultural heritage of African and originary people world wide.

Inspired by the South African anti-apartheid movement, Tropical Diaspora Records® call urges action to pressure oppression forces to comply with international law.
Our support work stands in solidarity with the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination under international law (UN Resolution 3236). It explicitly condemns all forms of racism, including anti-Semitism and Islamophobia.

Record labels perpetuate this ideology when they create through recordings the plane where those featured are kept alive as Others, the strange subject of the colonialist curiosity and inquiry. By claiming the words World, Ethno, Afro or Latin the colonialist gives the impression of universality. But this is a misrepresentation. Through these recordings the colonized learns to act as African, as Latin, as Native in the eyes of the white supremacist. It means, the colonized has been stripped of her own humanity and universalism in order to become a puppet...
